3/17/2010 2 Fats largely contain saturated fatty acids in linear chain, whereas oils largely contain monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids in bent chains Fats vs. Oils Studies indicate that type of dietary fat and amount of dietary fat are important for balanced diet: Current recommended amounts are: 15% - Monounsaturated fat 10% - Polyunsaturated fat <10% - Saturated fats Studies also indicate that: Saturated fats are considered “bad fats” Monounsaturated fats are considered “good fats” Trans- monounsaturated fats are considered “bad fats” Polyunsaturated fats can be both “good fats” and “bad fats” Omega 3 is an important “good fats”
