Although Grant was not interested in the military, he enrolled in the Military Academy at West Point in 1839. Grant’s classmates did not think much of him. He was always dressed sloppy and did not like to fit in with the social trends of the day. While at West Point, Grant spend most of his time reading classic novels because military literature did not interest him. He instead filled his time with classic novels. Grant graduated twenty-first out of thirty-ninth in his class. After graduation Grant was assigned to the 4thInfantry as a Second Lieutenant outside of St. Louis, Missiouri. While in Missouri, Grant met Julia Dent and they were engaged shortly before he left forthe Mexican-American War. After the war Grant returned, married Dent, and had two children. Shortly after, Grant spent time out West in Washington and California before leaving the military and returing home.
