Some Basic Physics To interpret the light from planets and stars, we need to know some things about light in general and how it interacts with matter. Light emerges from the laws of electricity and magnetism Electric charge ; electric and magnetic fields are conditions which exert forces on charges. A vibrating or accelerating charge produces oscillating patterns in EM fields which carry energy away at speed c = the speed of light. These oscillating fields generate electromagnetic radiation Frequency = # of oscillations per second = f Wavelength λ : the distance between wave peaks λ f = c where c is the speed of light
