Unformatted text preview: Planetary Surface Processes- Cratering - Nearly every solid planet or satellite contains impact craters, although in different amounts depending on the ages of their surfaces. Our Moon and the planet Mercury show clear evidence for impact cratering by interplanetary projectiles. The evidence includes: 1. The amount of material piled onto a crater’s raised rim is nearly equal to the amount of material excavated from the crater interior. 2. Nearly all lunar (Moon) craters are round. Impact craters will almost always be round even if the incoming direction is far from vertical. 3. Rock samples returned by the Apollo astronauts from the heavily cratered regions of the Moon consist of fragments of pre-existing rocks that have been welded together by the enormous force and pressures of the impact event.
