Briggs 1 Jeremy Briggs Professor Omar English 1302-82008 February 23, 2008 White Lightning It is a warm summer day. The kind of day that people will look outside and say “it’s such a pretty day,” but never step a foot out. Not a hint of wind and the infrequent cloud passing by hardly provides any comfort from the scorching sun blazing down. It is too hot for a picnic or a stroll in the park, because lets face it applying sunscreen before going out to eat has to potential to ruin any romantic evening. This type of weather is intended for one sport only, track and field. There is a large meet being held on the outskirts of the small town of Pearland, Texas. The one all the athletes have worked all spring and summer for, the qualifying round for regionals. This meet is so important to each athlete because if they don’t perform well at today, then it’s “better luck next year.” If they fail to place, then there will be no regionals, no state, no nationals, and even worlds, if athletically capable. There is a competitive edge in the air, as each competitor keeps to his or her own agenda, and focuses on their event. That is all that matters today, their event. Not what is going on
