Last Time Transcription = synthesis of RNA from DNA templates Classes of RNA: - prokayotic and eukaryotic cells: mRNA, rRNA, tRNA - eukaryotic cells only: pre-mRNA, snRNAs, snoRNAs, Each gene is transcribed from a single DNA strand, but different genes may be transcribed from different strands Genes are organized into transcription units: RNA coding region, including terminator, and the promoter, which controls transcription

RNA synthesis is catalyzed by RNA polymerases - synthesize RNA in 5’ -> 3’ direction - does NOT require a primer RNA polymerases: - prokaryotic cells : - only one type - comprised of core enzyme & sigma factor (whose binding to the core enzyme creates the holoenzyme, which has a high affinity for sequences in bacterial promoters) - eukaryotic cells : - multiple polymerases: - RNA pol I- large rRNAs - RNA pol II- pre-mRNAs & several small RNAs - RNA pol III- tRNAs, small rRNAs & other several small RNAs
