CHAPTER 15- FABRICS & RELATED STRUCTURES - Fabric: “planar structure consisting of yarns or fibers” ASTM - Planar— implies structure in which length & width are much higher than thickness - Fabric Construction Methods 1) Woven Fabrics:  weaving of fabrics consists of interlacing yarns @ right angles; by varying pattern of  interlacing, wide variety of diff fabric constructions can be produced; don’t have much stretch unless  elastic fibers/stretchable yarns used 2) Looped Fabrics:  constructed by 1 or more continuous yarns by formation of series of interconnected  loops; knitting best known; crochet another ex; knits are stretchable because loops can be elongated 3) Knotted Fabrics: 4) Nonwoven Fabrics:  webs of fibers held together into fabric by interlocking of fibers w/out necessity of  first forming yarns; felt or bark cloth 5) Stitch Through Fabrics:  stitch through or stitch bonding; technique constructing fabrics in which 2 sets of  yarns or masses of fibers stitched together into fabric structure by another set of yarns 6) Braided Fabrics:  created by plaiting together yarns/strips of fabrics; components interlaced in diagonal  7) Films:  polymeric sheets; not made from fibers—so not considered true textiles; sometimes laminated to
