2 Abstract This research focused on cleaning hard floor surfaces in both controlled and domestic environments with common cleaning products and fibre technology products. The effects these products had on airborne dust particulates, fungi, bacteria and surface bacteria were monitored. The second part of this research reported how effective cleaning cloths were at removing bacteria from kitchen surfaces under laboratory conditions. Under controlled conditions the fibre dust floor cleaner followed by the fibre mixed floor cleaner was the only intervention that did not significantly increase the PM 2.5 , PM 10 and PM 100 (p>0.050). When using the broom with dustpan and brush followed by standard string mop with cleaning chemical there was a significant increase in the PM 2.5 , PM 10 and PM 100 (p<0.050). During cleaning with the broom with dustpan and brush the PM 2.5 , (71.4 μ g/m 3 , controlled conditions) and PM 10 , (<46.1 μ g/m 3 , domestic environment) had significantly higher levels of airborne particulate matter compared to the other cleaning products. The dry dust mop and the broom with dustpan and brush both caused increases in airborne fungi concentrations. The dry dust mop when tested in house 8 had significantly higher levels of airborne fungi compared to the other cleaning product (p=0.019). The fibre dust floor cleaner followed by the fibre extreme floor cleaner was the only cleaning intervention to reduce the airborne fungi concentration, 197.2cfu/m 3 – 156.0 cfu/m 3 cultured on MEA and 290.1cfu/m 3 – 193.1cfu/m 3 cultured on DG18 agar, when cleaning under controlled conditions. The cleaning products tested in both the controlled conditions and domestic environment did not significantly decrease the concentration of airborne bacteria. When cleaning the domestic environments the broom with dustpan and brush was the only cleaning product that had significantly higher concentrations of airborne bacteria compared to the other cleaning products used in the same homes (p<0.050). The second part of this research studies the effectiveness of cleaning cloths to remove bacteria from kitchen surfaces. All of the cleaning cloths resulted in a 99.9% reduction in bacteria ( B. subtilis and E. coli ) concentrations from the surfaces (ceramic tiles and Formica®). This research showed that cleaning with the fibre technology products prevented indoor contaminants from increases due to the cleaning process and also reduced some of the contaminants monitored. The study also found that some of the conventional cleaning products available should not be used to clean indoor environments due to the high increase in indoor contaminants after cleaning.
