Com 230 Notes January 14, 2009 -Communication is the process of understanding and sharing meaning (DuPre) -Communication is a social process in which individuals employ symbols to establish and interpret meaning in their environment (Turner and West) Communication is a process-dynamic, ongoing, unending Meaning is important-what people extract from a message -Messages often have multiple meanings The turner and west definition doesn’t presume success at sharing or understanding -impt because it allows us to consider miscommunication Turner and West also recognize that communication is social and contextual Social: suggests that people and interactions are integral parts of communication processes Environment: is the situation or context in which communication occurs The intentionality debate Does Intention Matter Is all behavior communicative What matters is the messages—and how it is interpreted The Linear Model: Developed by Shannon and Weaver, sender message receiver ==================== noise
