TUNNEL KILNS Tunnel Kilns are continuously fired kilns used in larger factories. It is used for flow line production methods where the truck of loaded ware is loaded every hour or so into one end and removed from the other. Tunnel kiln requires means for moving the ware through the kiln.

FUNCTIONS The Tunnel kiln maintains and equalizes the temperature of the slabs arriving from the caster and delivers them to the rolling mill. The tunnel kiln provides a buffer of up to six hot slabs, available for rolling when the mill is ready.

Construction A tunnel kiln consisting of a succession of tunnel sections assembled from prefabricated large-surface side panels and ceiling panels supported on a tunnel frame of structural steel, at least some of the panels being removable for access to the kiln. Panels mounted on railcars form the bottom portion of the kiln. The panels are composed of multiple layers of different materials.

The tunnel kiln is equipped with a furnace computer system that calculates slab temperature, controls heating profiles and tracks material through the furnace. The kiln is roughly 675-foot long, divided into 11 zones. Natural gas burners maintain a temperature of 1800° F - 2100° F in the fired zones.

A door at the rolling mill exit end of the furnace prevents heat losses, opening when it is time to roll a slab. The kiln rollers can move slabs in either direction:
