Businesses increasingly rely on agents to conduct their business with customers. What ethical norms would businesses expect their agents to hold in carrying out their responsibilities? Clue: Look at the list of ethical norms and ask yourself: Which would be the most important to a business? Ethical norms of security and justice are expected in agency relationships. Security because an agent can denigrate the image or cost the principal a pretty penny. For example, an agent could commit tortuous actions within the scope of their employment—such as hitting a bystander with the company car —leaving the principal potentially liable. Justice because an agent’s actions should act within the best interests of their principal, and not purposefully cause the principal economic harm. For example the
