11. Examining the plate under the microscope proved to be a difficult task because of the fact that moisture had accumulated and obscured looking into the fungal plate, but it was still possible to determine the sporangia that had accumulated through asexual reproduction. It was possible to also notice that some sporangia did not carry the sexual spores that can be released to multiply. Also by looking through the prepared microscope slides it was possible to see the rhizoids from both the + and – form the gametangia and finally the zygosporangium with the fuzzy pointy ends. 12. The haploid structure of the fungal plates is the sporangia, until the positive and negative strands join through fertilization to form the diploid form, which is the zyosporangium. What is really similar in fungal reproduction to human is the fact that when sexual reproduction does occurs it happens it happens through haploid spores, much how humans used haploid gametes in sexual reproduction. Fertilization also occurs similar to humans as to strands of opposite signs come together. Of course the key difference is that humans are not able to spore off and grow new organisms of them like fungus do. 13. Fungi are heterotrophic because they use organic compounds like us for their growth, but since they are like plants fungi only tend to grow in areas where food is readily available. Fungi obtain their food by secreting digestive enzymes into substrates, which may include anything from fallen logs to skin of frogs. Then they absorb the organic molecules released by the action of the enzymes. Thus, fungi actually live in their food.
