Kristen Walsh Core Science December 6, 2009 Extra credit Genetic Engineering: Cloning Cloning is the process of producing genetically-identical individuals that occurs in nature when organisms such as bacteria, insects, or plants reproduce asexually. In simple terms, cloning is the creation of an organism that is an exact genetic copy of another. This means that every single bit of DNA is the same between the two. One of the first cloning experiments was done with Dolly the Sheep appeared in 1997. However, cloning experiments have been around far longer than Dolly. Some of these ways to clone and make genetic copy’s of organisms are through artificial embryo twinning and somatic cell nuclear transfer. Artificial embryo twinning is the relatively low-tech version of cloning. This technology mimics the natural process of creating identical twins. Somatic cell nuclear transfer uses a different approach than artificial cell twinning, but it produces the same result: an exact clone, or genetic copy, of an individual. This was the
