Signal Transduction Learning Objectives (Lectures 21 and 22) Discuss the features shared by all signaling systems. Identify six major signaling systems and give one example of how each is used. Define a second messenger and be able to identify (by name and/or structure) 5 common molecules that act as second messengers in eukaryotic cells. Explain the mechanism by which insulin receptor becomes activated. Describe the role of “activation loop” in activation of protein kinases. List the major proteins in the insulin signaling pathway and describe how each is activated and inactivated.
