The wily functional manager • Her job is to keep the best people working for her and giving you (the project manager) the duds. • Giving away good people is like giving away the agenda in a meeting. • You need to fight for good people. 11 Functions and Projects: At War? Functional managers Focus on keeping things running (maintain, sustain) Development of staff skills Maintain full time utilization of resources in long term Project Manager Get it done by then and for this much Developing skill not a consideration (not really) The PM is a nomad, uses skills and moves on toward completion. 5 13 How to Get Good People Motivators Do something cool, that people want to be a part of. Do something big that will be recognized Do something new that challenges team members to develop new skills Do something hard that challenges Give team member significant authority/autonomy Extra pay is always good but not necessary Keep it moving. People like it when project work is working. 14 How to Get Good People Working from bottom and top at same time If you really need a person • Step 1: meet person alone. Tell them you want them, ask their opinion. People like that. • Step 2: Meet with person’s supervisor. Indicate your need and a few names (plant the name) • Step 3: Encourage person to ask supervisor about your project. Tell them you need their support. • Step 4: Encourage your sponsor to ask for the person
