BIOL215 Lecture Week 03 Objective Assignment Chapter 3: Cells: The Living Units Overview of the cellular basis of life 1. List the three major regions of a generalized cell and indicate the general function of each region. a. Plasma membrane - a semi-porous barrier to the outside environment that also acts as a boundary, holding the cell constituents together and keeping other substances from entering, yet is permeable and allows specific molecules, nutrients, and other elements to enter the cell and waste materials to exit the cell. b. Cytoplasm the cellular material between the plasma membrane and the nucleus where most cellular activity takes place. c. Nucleus the gene-containing control center of the cells that houses the cellular instructions for protein building and dictates the amount and kind of proteins to be synthesized in direct response to outside signals acting upon the cell. The plasma membrane: Structure 1. Describe the chemical composition of the plasma membrane and relate it to membrane functions. a. Chemical composition of the plasma membrane is primarily of lipids and proteins. i. Lipids form a barrier to hydrophilic molecules, including sugars, proteins, nucleic acids, charged ions and other polar molecules, and cholesterol alters the fluidity of the membrane. ii. Proteins determine specific functions, including pumps, receptors, adhesion, etc. The plasma membrane: membrane transport 1. Relate the plasma membrane structure to active and passive transport mechanisms. a. Lipids Passive transport. b.
