Fontanels are fibrous membranes at the angles of cranial bones that accommodate brain growth in the fetus and infant. b. Fontanelles are soft spots on a baby's head that, during birth, enable the bony plates of the skull to flex, allowing the child's head to pass through the birth canal. 2. Classify joints structurally and functionally. a. Structurally - how the bones are connected to each other i. fibrous joint - joined by fibrous connective tissue ii. cartilaginous joint - joined by cartilage iii. synovial joint - not directly joined b.
