Determination of empirical formula of magnesium oxide Hypothesis: In this experiment we will determine the empirical formula of magnesium oxide by oxidizing magnesium ribbon with atmospheric oxygen in a crucible. Procedure: First we heat up the crucible to get rid of the grease till cooling down and weigh it with the cover. Then we measure 10 cm ribbon and fold it into an according shape and we weigh it. Then we place the Mg ribbon into the crucible and weigh it with the cover. Then we heat the crucible for 15 minutes after we move the cover to leave a small opening and heat it for 10 minute, observe till the materials glows red. We add 10 drops

Discussions: The problems that occurred during our experiments was the flame was not stable we used a poster to cover the flame so it doesnt move from its stable point but still the air was causing a problem. Observation : The empirical formula of magnesium oxide is Mgo Conclusion: Our percentage error was 0.0 we think that may did happened because we may had made a mistake when measured the mass....
