  Cells are mostly made of water (>70%): “life occurs under water” The body is mostly made of water (~60-70% in children, ~50-60% in adults) Cells (lean tissue) are composed of about 20% protein – true for almost all cells Most body triglyceride (TG) is stored in adipose tissue, although there is structural fat and membrane lipids in cells. Adipose tissue >70% TG (one molecule) Lean and adipose tissue have different characteristics, physical or chemical (molecular composition/ fluid/electrolytes/etc.) that allow differential measurement of content in body Basics of Body Composition

  About 2/3 of total body water (TBW) is intracellular, 1/3 is extracellular The extracellular fluid (ECF) space includes fluid around cells in tissue and fluid in the bloodstream Fluid in tissues is about 2/3 of extracellular volume; bloodstream is about 1/3 of ECF ECF and blood volume are not properly considered lean tissue, but are “fat-free mass” TBW and electrical conductivity do not therefore represent just lean tissue, but are influenced by ECF (which is altered in various disease states) Mineralized tissue (bone) is considered separately from either lean or fat tissue Fluid compartments in the whole body
