Vitamins - general information Vitamins are generally indispensable because they can’t be synthesized in sufficient quantities to meet individual need. When vitamin intake is insufficient, a deficiency occurs, accompanied by a measurable decline in health. If the deficiency is not too far advanced, the symptoms disappear when the vitamin is restored to the body Vitamins may also be used as pharmacological agents in treating non deficiency diseases. Vitamin D - historical perspective An understanding of the causative factors responsible for rickets (1910 - 1930). Sir Edward Mellanby working with dogs raised indoors and used diet studies to show rickets was caused by a trace component in the diet. Showed cod liver oil is an excellent antirachitic agent. In the 1920s Hess and Weinstock showed irradiated skin produces Vitamin D. Steenbock and Black found that irradiated rat food was antirachitic

can result from insufficient vitamin D in the diet or from insufficient amounts of ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Rickets can lead to skeletal deformation, such as vertebral or leg curvature. This X ray reveals bone deformation due to rickets. Nutritional Childhood Rickets Today this type of rickets is rare in developed countries.
