Objective: The objective of this lab is to investigate the validity of Newton’s 1 st Law through the balancing of forces. Description: The apparatus used in this lab was a force table, which is a flat circular table with the degrees of rotation labeled from 0 to 360 with pulleys around the table that can be moved. There is a centering pin that allows for the ring with strings attached with weight hangers to act as the mass point, in equilibrium when the ring is not touching the sides.
Theory: Newton’s 1 st Law deals with inertial coordinate systems, which are not accelerating or rotating with respect to the fixed stars, and will either be at rest or moving at a constant velocity. When all forces on a point add up to zero, the particle will be in equilibrium with a constant or zero velocity. Newton’s 1 st Law is contained in Newton’s 2 nd Law, with the 2 nd Law stating that the vector force is the sum of all the forces acting upon the mass; therefore, when the sum is zero the velocity must be a constant because acceleration is the derivative of velocity with respect for time.
