Staci Williams October 20, 2009 Separation and Purification of the Components of an Analgesic Powder Purpose/Summary of Procedure: To separate acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine and purify them. Also to check how well they are separated and purified by testing melting points and using TLC. Procedure/Observations: Preliminary Separation Determine weight of powder and transfer to Erlenmeyer flask, add 6mL methylene chloride, causing the solution to be cloudy since not all the powder dissolved into the mixture. Warm mixture and collect insoluble material by suction filtration, add 2mL warm methylene chloride to rinse flask. Redissolve crystallized solid with about 10- 12mL, this is solution A. Isolation and Purification of Acetaminophen: Transfer solid from funnel to small Erlenmeyer flask and add 2mL ethanol and heat to 75-80 degrees Celsius in bath. Using suction filtration filter the mixture with 1mL hot ethanol. Transfer filtrate to small beaker and evaporate ethanol (about 10 minutes). Weigh inactive ingredients, save a seed crystal of crude acetaminophen, then dissolve
