Based on the magnitude and sign of direct interactions between species, predict which indirect effects are likely to be important in structuring a community. 3. Explain the logic behind Paine’s original (1966) keystone predator hypothesis. 4. Explain why Paine’s experimental removal of Pisaster decreased community species richness. 5. Use the principles of Paine’s work to predict the effects of predators on other communities. 6. Explain the expanded current concept of a keystone species (from Power et al. 1996).
