IE 7610 Fundamentals of Six Sigma Homework 5 - Due April 14 2010 1. An engineer is interested in the effects of cutting speed (A), tool geometry (B), and cutting angle (C) on the life (in hours) of a machine tool. Two levels of each factor are chosen, and 3 replicates of a 2 3 factorial design are run. The results follow: Factors Tool Life A B C 1 2 3 -1 -1 -1 2 2 2 8 25 +1 -1 -1 3 2 4 3 36 -1 +1 -1 3 5 3 4 40 +1 +1 -1 5 5 4 7 52 -1 -1 +1 4 4 4 5 38 +1 -1 +1 4 0 3 7 36 -1 +1 +1 6 0 6 5 58 +1 +1 +1 4 9 4 1 47 a) Conduct an analysis of variance study to identify significant factors and interactions, as well as ranking of the significant effects. b) Draw main and interaction charts for significant effects/interactions. c) Derive the optimal machining condition for maximum tool life d) Write down a regression model to predict tool life under various machining conditions. 2. A 2 5-1 fractional factorial experiment is used to study the effects of these factors to the adhesion process, with defining relation I= ASMCT. The force to remove the plastic coating is used as the response, clearly, the larger the force, the better the adhesion effect. The
