Geog 1992 Spatial Demography 9/21 Two Very Different Lives Everyone knows that having children is expensive, but I don’t think that young people today really understand the economic toll that having children involves. There are the obvious costs like food, clothing, and recreation, but if the parents need to work to support their children they also have to pay for child care. Also if they have such responsibilities at home, they might not be counted on as much by the boss to put in the extra effort needed to move ahead in the business, creating a huge economic hit. Let’s consider the lives of two women, both are married and have a college education, but one woman has a four year old child and the other has no children. Both women work at the same company, under the same boss, but that is where the similarity between their two lives ends. The woman who has the four year old wakes up in the morning whenever her son decides it’s time, this is usually around five or five thirty. Unlike the woman who only
