The main function of fiber within the body is to aid in regulating the digestive system (Whole Grains and Fiber, 2010). Fiber also helps reduce blood cholesterol levels and can lower the risk of heart disease (Whole Grains and Fiber, 2010). Fiber rich foods can also help with managing weight because it provides a feeling of fullness with fewer calories (Whole Grains and Fiber, 2010). There are many different food sources which contain fiber. The best sources of fiber are bread, pasta, oatmeal and grits. Fiber can also be found added to some yogurts (Whole Grains and Fiber, 2010). There are two types of fiber, soluble and insoluble. The difference between the two types are that one; soluble fiber, can be dissolved in water, and the other; insoluble fiber, cannot (Whole Grains and Fiber, 2010). According to the article the fiber recommendations for children versus adults is very different.

Unformatted text preview: A childs fiber intake is calculated by taking the age of the child and adding 5. So a 5 year old child would need 10g of fiber (Van Horn, 1997). However upon reaching adulthood and having a 1500 or more calories the fiber recommendation remains 25g (Van Horn, 1997). I found the recommended intakes for children versus adults interesting. I also learned about the other functions of fiber in the body. Before this assignment I was only aware of its abidance in digestion. References Van Horn, Linda (1997).
