Book 5 Acestes: Ruler of port Eryx in Sicily. Founder of Segesta. Friend and fellow Trojan of Aeneas. Aeneas arrives at Eryx and claims that his father is buried at Eryx and he wants to have festivities in honor of the anniversary of his father’s one year passing. He goes to his father’s grave and starts sacrificing, but a snake comes out, samples his food, and heads back. First, there’s a boat race. Gyas is in the lead, but then starts floundering. He throws Menoetes, who is steering his ship, into the water and begins steering it by himself. Sergestus takes the lead and then crashes. Cloanthus and Mnestheus remain, but Cloanthus prays to Neptune so he wins. Prizes: Each ship gets three bullocks, wine, and silver. Additionally, first place captain gets cloak with gold embroidery, second gets chain mail, third gets 2 cauldrons Nisus and Euryalus: Engage in a footrace. Nisus leads for most of the way but slips on sacrificial (bull) blood and loses to Euryalus. Prizes: 2 arrows, a trophy for all. 1
