Management Chapter 16 I. What is motivation? a. The process by which a persons efforts are energized, directed, and sustained toward attaining a goal b. Energy: a measure of intensity or drive c. Energy is channeled in a direction that benefits the organization d. Persistence dimension: persist in putting forth effort to achieve those goals II. Early theories of motivation a. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs i. Physiological ii. Safety iii. Social iv. Esteem v. Self-actualization b. i. Theory X: negative view of people; workers have little ambition, dislike work, want to avoid responsibility, and need to be closely controlled to work efficiently ii. Theory Y: positive view; workers can exercise self-direction, accept and actually seek out responsibility, and consider work to be a natural activity iii. Participation in decision making, responsible and challenging jobs, and good group relations would maximize employee motivation c. Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory i. Motivation-hygiene theory ii. Intrinsic factors are related to job satisfaction, while extrinsic factors are associated with job dissatisfaction iii. Extrinsic factors are hygiene factors, emphasize motivators, the intrinsic factors III. Contemporary theories of motivation
