Christman 1 Tiffany Christman/FTMYERS Professor Hazel HHSM/Weekly Forum 3 21 March 2010 Describe the key differences between the Autonomic Nervous System and the Somatic Nerves. The Somatic Nervous System and Autonomic Nervous System both belong to the Peripheral Nervous System. The Somatic Nervous System though is considered to bring about voluntary reactions, whereas the Autonomic Nervous System triggers what are considered to be involuntary reactions (Kimball). I think that the uses of terms such as involuntary and voluntary are rather a misnomer because for an example of a reaction by the Somatic Nervous System is your knee jerking when the patellar reflex test is done. You have zero control over your knee jumping, and yet this reaction belongs to the nervous system termed as voluntary? I felt a better explanation would be that the Autonomic Nervous System reacts to changes within the body as
