lecture 2: algae mycelium is multiple filaments. until found mating type it will group up, then when met, both monokaryon fuse together and form new filament hats has both kind of nuclei in each cell but they dont fuse together. it is called a dikaryon. The dikaryotic state can survive for years until its envoronment is preffered. Mushrrom: dikaryotic hyphae, everywhere on mushrrom is (N+N) except on gills where fusion of nuclei occurs which become 2N. then meiosis occurs to make spored and teh spores make new hyphae. mating types mycorrhizae association between fungi and roots lichan symbiotic assosiation between fungi and photosynthetic org. usually algea lichen = structure, cover. algea= provide carbon, sunlight first to colonize in dead (burnt) areas no soil. break down substrate and form new soils. algea: not a single group; green algea, red algea, brown algea, diatoms, dinoflagellates about 130 thousand species 1.5 mya organisms predominantly unicellular small invertabrae, diatoms, dinofl are the plankton (bottom of food chain) organism uni -> multcellular
