Western Civilization 12 September 2008 1. Martin Luther Cont. A. Luther argued that if the Pope could release souls from Purg, then why did he not just do it, why charge money for it? B. 95 Theses: questioned the authority of the Pope and church. The 95 Theses were translated into German and were spread all throughout Europe. The Europeans started to question the Church and Pope all together. C. Although the church tried to silence Luther, Frederick the Wise of Saxony was in outs with the Emperor Charles V, who was in with the Pope, so Frederick protected Luther to hurt Charles V although Frederick did the same and prospered just the same as the Pope. D. Diet of Worms: Charles V called together all of the high raking people of his Empire and called on Luther. He was hoping that Luther would see the way of the Church to back down but Luther said “Here I Stand” and he said that he could not change his views. Charles V would have had to use force to shut up Luther but Charles V decided not to do
