SOCL 2501 19:37 What is Sociology? The systmatic study of human society, behaviors, and social interatction Sociologists are not concerned with internal motivations for behavior (mental  or emotional states) o Study of the social world and how society influences behavior, attitudes,  and beliefs o Examine how individuals interact with and respond to their world and  worldview Meaning we attempt to study the world as is. . not as a reflection of our  own personal belief or value sysqtem, Focuses on factors  Society and Culture  Society – refers to people who live in some territory and share many of the  same behavior  Culture – way of life including widespread values, beliefs, and behavior.  Integral part of our society, what gives us color.  Personal vs. Sociological Imagination  You cant claim to know the state of society based only on your own personal  experience “abortion debate” – experiencing it yourself doesn’t neccissarily quailify you to
