Chapter 12  Behavior and Biology People have long believed  psychological variables  (such as worry)  affect the body In past, prevalent mindset was mind-body split- though they were separate and had no influence on each  other. - Current belief is a mind- body unity. Lots of recent research on behavior & brain  - led to increased understanding of connection/relationship between mind & body - current belief is that mind & body are a unity with each inevitably affecting the other - called the  biopsychosocial model processes that affect the body AND vice-versa   (how disease affects behavior) Health psychologists work to develop applications of behavior interventions in biological processes  almost all behavior therapies applied to treat variety of med disorders By mid-20 th  century generally accepted individual’s psychological state --important determinant in course  of  psycosomatic illnesses  (physical illnesses that are strongly influenced by psychological issues)            EX psychologistsomatic illnesses – ulcers/Hypertension/asthma/chronic fatigue syndrome Anxiety DOES have an effect on physical being.   Health Psychology In the US and other developing countries, a major killer is harm to body caused by individual behavior At the turn of 20 th  century infectious diseases were th leading causes of death By mid-cent, leading cause of death became chronic disease  leading causes of death/illness/injury include  - incorrect eating habits (too much food/fat/NA) - drug/ETOH abuse/ cig smoking (estimated 1/5 of deaths related 2 smoking) - lack of exercise - vehicular accidents - 1/3 – 1/2 deaths are due to consequences of behave

To improve pub health, change in focus-- shift from controlling external factors (sanitation/germs) to  changing individuals behaviors   (EX- eating habits, reactions 2 stress) is logical for psychology to be in the  forefront in treating these problems health psych is specialty in professional psychology - Originally known as behavior med/clinical health psych/med psych/behavior health - labeled as being medical - deals w/integration of biomed info about health/illness  WITH  current psychological knowledge Have witnessed rapid growth of health psych – this is  attributed to several factors 1) disc of behavior components of disease N last cent 2) growing emphasis on “self-care”  a. once people are ill, reality is their health care is mostly self-care  b. psychologists can help them take better care of themselves
