Sordaria Genetics Discussion In this experiment Sordaria fimacola , an ascomycete fungus, was used because of its advantageous characteristics such as short reproduction rate and haploid nature organism, which demonstrates its genotype through phenotype. The color of the ascospore reflects the inheritance pattern of the Sordaria . In each ascus, there are eight ascospores and the positions of these eight ascospores were determined in the anaphase I and anaphase II. There were two test crosses: one between the wild type strain (g + t + ) and tan spore gene (gt + ) spore, and the other between the wild type strain (g + t + ) gray spore gene (g + t). We figured out the mapping distance from centromere to the gray alleles and tan alleles and through this data we examined the gene linkage between the gray spore and the tan spore. This experiment was designed to evaluate map distances and to determine gene linkage of the gray and tan spore genes that are used in biosynthesis of melanin in Sordaria . Based on
