Joseph C. Palais 6.7 2 Section 6.9 Vertical-Cavity Surface- Emitting Laser Diode (VCSEL) The VCSEL is surface emitting laser diode as contrasted with the conventional edge- emitting laser diode. The beam pattern is circular, better matching the circular fiber core. VCSELs can be constructed in two- dimensional arrays on a single substrate.

Unformatted text preview: Layer Active Region Output Joseph C. Palais 6.7 4 VCSEL • The diodes in a VCSEL array can each operate at a slightly different wavelength. This is useful in wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) systems where multiple wavelengths are simultaneously transmitted on a single fiber. WDM systems are described in Chapter 9. Joseph C. Palais 6.7 5 VCSEL • The VCSEL array produces lower cost diodes. • The VCSEL geometry produces better fiber coupling efficiency....

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
