ILRCB 205 — Spring 2010 Professor Harry Katz 255-2185/hck2@cornell.edu C OLLECTIVE B ARGAINING P URPOSE : This course provides an introduction to collective bargaining, with primary emphasis on the private sector in the United States. It is assumed that students have taken (or will be taking simultaneously) courses in labor history and labor law. The instructor will suggest additional readings for students who have not had adequate preparation in labor history and labor law. R EADINGS : Students should purchase copies of, An Introduction to Collective Bargaining and Industrial Relations , Harry C. Katz, Thomas A. Kochan, and Alexander Colvin, Irwin- McGraw-Hill, 2008, Fourth Edition. R EQUIREMENTS : In addition to the required reading assignments, there will be a preliminary exam, a final exam, an organizing case, an arbitration case, and two mock bargaining exercises. Grading will be determined on the basis of the following weights: Organizing Case: 10% 2 Mock Bargaining Exercises 20% Arbitration Case 10%
