HOMEWORK 2 Due date: Fri, Jan 22 nd 2010 Problem 1 . Dowling 6.9. Do not solve Part (c). Problem 2 . A set of strain gauges on the free surface of a steel structure (with Young's modulus of 196 GPa and Poisson's ratio of 0.30, record strains of e xx = 3.0 x 10 -3 , e yy = -1.5 x 10 -3 and γ xy = 2.0 x 10 -3 . What is the strain energy per unit volume on the surface of this structure? Problem 3. A bar of length 1 m and cross-section 10 cm x 10 cm is held such that there is no deformation along its long axis. It is loaded with a uniformly-distributed force of 10 MN as shown. If the Young’s modulus is 200 GPa and the Poisson ratio is 0.3 find the three-dimensional stress state in the bar. Problem 4. A reactor vessel is cylindrical in shape with a radius R = 6 m, thickness t = 15 mm and length L = 30 m. It is initially empty, and then filled with methane and pressurized to 2 MPa. If the material is a high strength steel with Young’s modulus E = 210 GPa and Poisson ratio ? = 0.3, find the final volume of the vessel, after the gas is
