ME350 HW #8 Journal bearings Due: Apr 9 (Fri) 3 pm 1. An internal combustion engine has high wear at the top dead center (TDC) position of the piston rings and cylinder liner contact region. Explain why? In comparison, do you expect the liner wear at bottom dead center (BDC) to be more significant than that in the TDC? Is the wear at BDC important? Why and why not? 2. Camshaft journal bearing. List and explain three possible causes for the excess wear of the diesel engine camshaft journal. 3. Effect of viscosity or type of engine oil on the performance of the journal bearing The value of viscosity (4 μ reyn ) in Example 12-1 matches to the viscosity of 20W-50 at 175 deg F. Under the same temperature and condition in Example 12-1, find the viscosity for 10W-30 and 10W (using the viscosity chart in Fig. 12-14). Based on the viscosity values, find h o , e , f , T , ( hp ) loss , Q , Q s , and p max . Plot the value of h o , e , f , T , ( hp ) loss , Q , Q s , and p max vs. viscosity for three types of engine oil 20W-50, 10W-30, and 10W.

What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
