Sociology 2-7 Chapter 3 Symbols and Language: Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis -how we communicate with each other-symbols -something which means something else->language is the most critical part of our communication. Without language we cant convey any abstract ideas ex> -language is not a simple container of our thoughts-> Sapir-Whorf-language is not a simple container of our thoughts it makes our life different, using particular words, particular structure, our behavior depends on the language we speak. Ex> In japan you introduce your brother as “older”, this is a constrant reminder of their heritage that respecting your elders is very important; America you just say brother. Values Values and norms are important in culture Values - defenine what is good and what isnot in a society; they idea shared by the people in the society.ex>hard working, honesty, being on time(relatively vague but a belief that is shared) -they are not in the legal code, they aren’t in a student handbook, its so vague, we are
