1. Describe proper sampling techniques for a semi-trailer load of hay if I want to send a sample to the lab for analysis. To send a sample of a semi-trailer load of hay, we would need to use a pooled core sample taken from many different bales in the trailer. If the hay were baled, we could take samples from the ends of the bales. If the hay was loose or chopped hay in the trailer, samples could be taken from random locations around the trailer. We would take enough samples to fill a half-gallon plastic bag, properly label it, and then send it to the lab for further analysis. 2. What is the point of feedstuffs analysis? Feedstuff analysis gives us a detailed analysis of the composition of that feed so that we can make sure the animal receiving the food is eating the correct amount of nutrients for its particular body composition or purpose, such as milking, breeding, or meat. 3. This lesson gives information on many methods of feedstuff analysis. No single producer will have need to analyze samples of all their feedstuffs using all tests discussed in this unit.
