1. Note to students: This particular question requires synthesis of material from the whole lesson. In addition, you will need material found in the last section of this text chapter “Water Quality.” Presume that your cattle herd is not drinking much water. It is your job to discover why. Develop a step-by-step plan for troubleshooting the problem. Describe what steps you would take at each point in your plan if you found a positive response to your solution and what steps you would take if you found a negative response to your solution. Number and list your steps. Make it easy for me to read. There are many factors that can affect the overall usefulness of the water in a herd of cattle. Some of these factors may be omitted, however, because the cattle themselves are not drinking much water. This indicates that there is not a toxic mineral involved that does not affect palatability, simply because if there was one of these mineral present, the palatability of the water would not be affected, resulting in no decrease of water consumption in the herd. Therefore, we can overlook these minerals as possible problems (nitrates, fluoride, and salts of some heavy metals). Because we know that the palatability of the water has indeed been compromised, I suggest that the water be tested for pathogenic microorganisms (bacteria, protozoa, fungi), algae, hydrocarbons and other oily substances, pesticides, and many industrial chemicals that sometimes pollute water supplies. Also, because high levels of nitrate in
