Lakisah Mikell MNGT 5590 Case 6.1: The Hovey and Beard Company Case 1. Discuss how the principles of job design and reinforcement theory apply to the performance problems at the Hovey and Beard Company. In the area of job design, management was set on running the company in a particular way. Within the painting section of the plant, management and the engineers expected the toys to be painted in what they thought was an efficient manner. The reason why they had issues with their job design was that they didn’t want to redesign their process. Because of the issues with production and the complaints of the employees, the job design should’ve changed to boost production. In the area of reinforcement, Hovey and Beard’s plan affected the employees’ ability to produce the desired results in both a positive and negative way. With management and the engineers setting the tone for the level of production, it caused a decrease in production, the employees reacted negatively to the speed that management set, and they voiced their complaints.
