Case Summary First Solar is a company that designs, manufactures, and markets solar energy products. They market cost-efficient solar energy solutions and their main product is a crystalline thin-film structure that has a cadmium telluride semiconductor material to convert sunlight into electrical energy. In producing such a product, First Solar has found a way to take advantage of the environmental opportunities by harnessing the sun to provide alternative energy as opposed to using fossil fuels. Also, by taking this route, First Solar has positioned themselves well in the market due to the shortage of silicon that they don’t depend on. This factor has caused them to have the ability to aggressively produce their product in order to serve a market that’s underserved. First Solar is now looking for ways to make their products affordable to everyone in order to become a household name. Key Marketing Issues Marketing Environment – The competitive, economic, political, legal, regulatory, technological, and sociocultural forces that surround the customer and affect the marketing mix. Competition – Other organizations that market products that are similar to or can be substituted for a marketer’s products in the same geographic area.
