Ph 111.01 Fall, 2008 Solutions, Problem set 2a (3) Problem 1 . A honeybee leaves the hive, flies in a straight line to a flower 5 km away in 20 min, and then takes 20 minutes to return (also in a straight line). (a) Please find the distance traveled and the displacement for the entire trip. Distance traveled just accumulates, giving 5 km + 5 km = 10 km. The displacement goes straight from start to end, and they are at the same place; so the displacement is zero. (b) Please find the average speed and average velocity for the entire trip. Just divide by the time, 40 minutes: Average speed = 10 km/40 min = 0.25 km/min. Average velocity = zero. (c) If the bee had not flown in a straight line, but instead with an unknown motion - to the flower and back, which could not be determined: the average speed or the average velocity? Well, the average velocity would still be zero, since the bee ends up at the same place it started. On the other hand, the average speed would involve the total accumulated
