Unformatted text preview: Principles of Biology SPRING 2010 Course Syllabus First, a Word From Your Instructors Welcome to Biology 25L! Were glad youre here. This semester were going to cover the gamut of biology from DNA and evolution, to cell signaling and the nervous system, to photosynthesis and predator/prey interactions. In addition to looking at the facts behind each of our topics, well be looking at questions like: How do these concepts apply to novel biological questions? How does this topic relate to other topics weve considered? Whats the big picture of biology? You may find that the types of things we ask you to do are different from what youve been asked to do in other science or biology courses. That is, we wont ask you to repeat back to us things youve memorized. Instead, well ask you to take the facts of biology and do something with them. That being said, we wanted to share with you, specifically, our goals for you this semester : Improve your ability to think critically about biology. When we say think critically, were referring to skills like comprehending, applying, and analyzing problems. Learn biology in a balanced way. That is, we want you to learn some facts -- thats one side of the balance -- but even more importantly we also want you to discover the implications of those facts and to learn how you could test the implications -- the other side of the balance. You can expect something of us this semester, too . You can expect us to teach toward the goals weve just outlined. You can expect us to design tests and other assignments that move you toward the goals weve just outlined. You can also expect us to be accessible to help you and to be open to your feedback. Finally, you can expect us to work hard and do our best to make this class a great experience for everyone. All us in Biology 25, lecturers and TAs, are eager to share our enthusiasm for biology with you. On a day-to-day basis, your lab section TA is the first person you should talk to when you have questions about the course , whether about material we have covered in lab and lecture or about policies or logistics. You should view your TA as your own teacher in a 12-person lab class embedded in the context of the larger lecture class. Get to know your TA, and work with him or her closely. Of course, each lab section is part of a larger course, and the important course policies are uniform across all sections. The highlights of these policies are outlined on the following pages. We wish you the best this semester and look forward to working with you.
