Functional Groups There are > 18 million organic compounds! Memorization of each individual molecules’ reactivity impossible Solution: group molecules into families by FUNCTIONAL GROUPS according to STRUCTURE . Structure is intimately related to reactivity/physical properties therefore all molecules in the same functional group are expected to behave similarly… Recognizing similarities and patterns makes information more manageable .
