Sheet1 Page 1 Chapter 24: Section 1: Deepening American Involvement -For nearly 2,000 years, the Vietnamese had struggled against domination by their powerful neighbor, China. -In the 1800s, Vietnam became a colony of France (French-Indo China). -The Vietnamese began resisting French rule. -After WWII, the independence movement was led by Ho Chi Minh, a nationalist who sympathized with Communist ideas. -By 1954, Ho's army was defeating the French. Representatives of Vietnam, France, and other powers met to resolve the conflict. As a result, Vietnam was divided into two nations. of the South. -In 1955, North and South began battling for control of the nation. -1961, John F. Kennedy became president of the U.S. and he was determined to stop the spread of communism. He supported Diem's gov't and sent thousands of American military advisors to South Vietnam to help them resist the North. -In spite of American aid, North Vietnamese forces and Communist forces in the South, known as VIET CONG, gained control of more and more territory. -In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson began a rapid expansion of American military involvement in the war. -The number of American combat troops in Vietnam increased from 25,000 in 1965, to over 500,000 in 1968. -January 1968, Viet Cong and North Vietnamese troops launched the TET OFFENSIVE, a series of attacks throughout South Vietnam. -It will be television that will bring the war to millions of Americans. Section 2: The Brutality of the War -American soldiers faced very difficult conditions during the War. -The Viet Cong had several important advantages.
