Sheet1 Page 1 Chapter 16: The New Deal, 1933-1938 Section 1: Forging a New Deal problems caused by the Depression. -Relief: programs to help you IMMEDIATELY. -Recovery: programs to help you REBUILD. -Reform: programs to prevent the disaster from occurring again. -Even Roosevelt himself was not sure exactly how the New Deal would work. -From March until June 1933 is known as THE HUNDRED DAYS***FDR pushed program after program through Congress to provide relief, create jobs, and stimulate economic recovery. Closing the Banks -His first step was to restore public confidence in the nation's banks. -March 5, 1933 -Pushed Congress to pass the EMERGENCY BANKING ACT***authorized the gov't to inspect the financial health of all banks. -Americans regained confidence in the banks. -Began depositing more money in accounts then they were taking out. -In June 1933, Congress established the FEDERAL DEPOSIT INSURANCE CORPORATION (FDIC) to insure bank deposits up to $5,000. Provide Relief and Create Jobs -His next step was to help the overburdened local relief agencies. -Established a Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA). -FERA put federal money into PUBLIC WORKS PROGRAMS***gov't funded projects to build public facilities. -November 1933, CIVIL WORKS ADMINISTRATION (CWA), gave jobs building or improving roads, parks, airports, and other facilities to the unemployed. -CIVILIAN CONSERVATION CORPS (CCC), established March 1933, it put more than 2.5 million young unmarried men to work restoring and maintaining forests, beaches, and parks. (FDR's Favorite Program)
