EAD 234A: E&M Homework #8 Due Thursday, March 11, 2010 1. A linearly polarized electromagnetic plane wave with frequency ω is normally incident from vacuum onto an excellent conductor with permittivity ε c = ε 0 , permeability μ c = μ 0 , and conductivity σ . (a) Compute the time average incident power per unit area I 0 incident on the conductor in terms of the electric field amplitude E 0 . ( b) Part of the incident wave continues into the conducting medium and part of the incident wave is reflected. Write equations relating the fields of the incident, transmitted, and re- flected waves. Solve for the transmitted and reflected field amplitudes to lowest nontrivial order in ωε 0 / σ . (c) Compute the transmitted and reflected time average power per unit area I t and I r as a function of distance from the surface of the conductor. What fraction of the incident power is reflected? Evaluate the reflection coefficient R = I r /I 0 numerically for 1GHz microwaves and for optical frequencies incident on silver [ σ = 6.3 x10 7 ( m) 1 ].
