Chapter 13: Using Visual Aids Purpose of Visual Aids Visual Aids- Objects, visual representations, and numerical clarifiers used to supplement a verbal message, thus enhancing communication goals Audience-related purposes- stimulate audience and retention Speaker-related purposes- guide through delivery, relieve of the necessity of memorizing complicated facts, assist in explaining complex ideas, and improve professional credibility Effective visual aids- result in audience who pays attention, understand message, and respond to speaker’s goals Explain, simplify, and illustrate complex ideas Types of Visual Aids Objects- concrete visual aids that can be inanimate or animate ( certain objects should never be used i.e. firearms, fireworks, illegal drugs, drug paraphernalia, or alcohol) Visual representations- photograph, map, drawing, diagram, blueprint—either enlarged to presentation size or projected onto a screen Numerical clarifiers- are used to simplify and explain complex concepts,
